1. The Bottom Line: Is there a real risk?
The short answer: Theoretically yes, but in real life, the risk is incredibly low.
Most modern pacemakers and ICDs (Implanted Cardioverter Defibrillators) have a "magnet mode". When a strong magnetic field gets too close, it can temporarily change how the device works.
However, magnetic shower door seals use flexible ferrite powder encased in plastic, which is relatively weak. According to standard UK safety guidelines, as long as you keep a 15cm (6 inch) gap, you’re usually spot on and completely safe.

2. The Science: Why do magnets interfere?
Pacemakers have a "reed switch" inside. Doctors actually use powerful medical magnets to trigger this switch during check-ups to adjust the device.
- Safety Buffer: The NHS and British Heart Foundation (BHF) recommend keeping any magnetic household items at least 15cm away from your chest.
- Field Drop-off: The magnetic pull from a shower strip vanishes very quickly with distance. Unless you’re literally leaning your chest against the seal for a long time, it’s unlikely to trigger any issues.
3. Risk Assessment for UK Bathrooms
Daily Use: Opening and closing your shower door is a quick, dynamic movement. Since there’s naturally a gap between you and the door frame, it’s almost impossible to stay within that 15cm danger zone for long. It’s properly safe for daily rinsing.
The tricky bit: Installation. If you have a pacemaker, don't do the DIY yourself. Measuring, cutting, and snapping the magnetic seals in place brings the magnets very close to your chest for a long time. Get a mate to do it for you!
4. For Total Peace of Mind: Non-Magnetic Options
If you’re still a bit worried or belong to a high-sensitivity group, you can skip the magnets entirely. Non-magnetic seals work just as well.
For 180-degree swing doors, we recommend the "Double Seal Combo":
Bubble Seal + H-Type Seal
How it works: Put the Bubble Seal on one side and the H-Type on the other. When the door shuts, the fins overlap to create a perfect water barrier—no magnets required.
Top Tip: Make sure the soft fin of the H-Type seal points inside the shower for the best drainage.
5. Four Safety Tips for UK Homeowners
- The 15cm Rule: Avoid leaning your chest directly against the magnetic edges when hopping in or out.
- Don't Linger: Don't lean against the magnetic door frame for a chat or a rest.
- Ask the Experts: Every device is different. If in doubt, have a quick word with your Cardiologist or technician.
- Go Magnet-Free: Swap your strips for non-magnetic vertical seals for zero stress.
