If a new clear seal looks right when it is fitted to a sauna door, but soon starts to curl, feel tacky, sag, or drag lightly along the floor, the issue is not always poor trimming. It is not always a badly adjusted door either. More often, the seal can fit the door, but the material is not suited to long-term use around a hot sauna door edge.

At first, it may seem to do the job. The soft edge touches the glass, the door closes properly, and the gap appears to be covered. After a few heating cycles, though, the section closest to the heat may begin to soften. The once-straight edge starts to bend. Up close, the surface may no longer feel clean and dry. It may feel slightly tacky, almost as if it has been warmed, softened, and cooled again.

Many customers first assume they have ordered the wrong size, or that the door is not closing properly. But if the seal itself has become soft, curled, sagged, or has a slight melted feel, it should not be treated as a simple fitting issue. A sauna door is different from a normal bathroom door. When judging this kind of door and screen sealing problem, the seal is not only there to stop water; it also has to cope with heat, changes in material behaviour as the sauna warms up, and the pressure of the door opening and closing repeatedly.

The real question is not only whether the seal can be fitted. It is whether it can keep its shape in that temperature environment.

PVC Is Not Unusable, But It Is Better Suited to Short-Term or Lower-Heat Areas

Standard PVC seals still have their place. They are common on shower doors, bath screens, and ordinary glass doors, and they solve plenty of everyday sealing problems. If the sauna is only used occasionally, and the seal is not in a position that stays hot for long, PVC may not show obvious problems in the short term.

The trouble usually starts when PVC is treated as a long-term sauna door sealing solution. When first fitted, it can feel reassuring. It looks clear, flexible and close enough to the old seal. Once trimmed to length, it may sit neatly against the door edge and cover the gap when the door closes. After several heating cycles, however, the area exposed to heat can start to lose its support. The straight edge may begin to bend slightly, the door may not close against it as neatly as it did at first, and only later do the more obvious signs of softening, curling, or warping appear.

So the better question is not simply “Can PVC be used?” but “Is this position suitable for long-term PVC use?” If it is a temporary fix, it may solve the immediate problem. But if the door edge is regularly exposed to heat, or the same area has already had several standard seals replaced — each one working at first and then curling or softening later — it is probably not the best place to keep using the same type of material.

This is especially common with garden saunas and home saunas in the UK. In winter, the outside of the door can be cold while the inside is hot, so the seal repeatedly goes through temperature changes. In that setting, standard PVC will usually have a shorter life than it would in a bathroom.

These Changes Suggest the Seal Is No Longer Suitable for Long-Term Use

A sauna door seal does not have to fall off completely before it needs replacing. In many cases, it is still attached to the door, but it is no longer working in the way it should.

For example, a side seal should normally sit in a straight line and lightly meet the glass or frame when the door closes. After a few uses, it may start to look wavy. One section may still touch properly, while another section lifts away slightly. The door may look closed, but when you sit inside the sauna, you can feel heat slowly escaping near the edge. That does not usually mean the door has suddenly failed. It often means the seal has lost its original shape.

Bottom seals can show the same problem. Once the old strip begins to sag, it may brush the floor when the door opens, or leave an uneven gap when the door is shut. Some customers then think about replacing it with a wider bottom seal, but a sauna door may need some ventilation space underneath. It should not always be fully sealed. The important point is whether the old strip has been distorted by heat and is now leaking in a place that should be sealed.

If the surface feels tacky, looks as if it has softened and cooled again, or gives off a slight plastic smell when the sauna heats up, it is not a good sign for long-term use. It may still cover part of the gap, but the material is already unstable, and further curling, sagging, or warping is more likely.

Do Not Buy a Wider Seal Before Checking Whether the Gap Should Be Sealed

When heat escapes from the bottom of a sauna door, many people’s first thought is to buy a wider bottom seal and cover the gap. That is understandable, especially with a garden sauna in winter. If warm and cold air can be felt around the door, it is easy to assume the seal simply is not large enough.

But some sauna doors are designed to leave a degree of ventilation at the bottom, and that gap is not always meant to be fully closed. If only one section of the old strip has sagged from heat and is brushing the floor, a wider replacement may not solve the problem. It may make the door harder to open and close, or it may change the airflow the sauna was designed to have.

The first step is to check whether the bottom gap is unwanted heat loss or part of the sauna’s original design. The same applies to the side and top of the door. It is not enough to look at the size of the gap alone. Glass thickness, frame distance, opening direction, and whether the fitting surface is flat all affect which seal will work.

Many clear seals look similar at first glance, but the real differences may be in the material, hardness, and fitting method. Checking the position and purpose first is safer than simply ordering a wider replacement.

TPE Is Better Suited to Heat-Related Warping Over Time

The value of TPE is not that it looks dramatically different. It is that it is better suited to positions exposed to heat over time.

A sauna door seal needs some flexibility. If it is too hard, it will not sit neatly against the glass or frame. If it becomes too soft under heat, it can collapse or lose shape. In terms of seal material heat resistance and rebound performance, TPE has a more rubber-like feel and usually keeps its elasticity and shape better in high-temperature conditions. For glass sauna doors, steam room doors, and frequently used sauna doors, that matters more than finding a clear strip that simply looks similar.

If you only need a short-term fix for a small gap, PVC may be enough. But if the old seal has already curled, sagged, become tacky, developed a slight melted feel, or started to smell of plastic, replacing it with another standard PVC seal may not solve the real issue. It is better to check whether a TPE option is more suitable for the heat involved.

Laura’s advice is to look first at where the seal has failed, then at how often the sauna is used. If it is on a side edge, closing edge, or bottom edge that regularly takes heat, do not choose only by appearance. Heat resistance and rebound are more important.

Many sauna door seal problems are difficult to judge from a written description alone. When a customer says heat is escaping around the door, it could be a glass thickness issue, a gap size issue, or an old seal that has already warped from heat.

The simplest option is to send us two photos. One should show the gap with the door closed. The other should show the old seal close up. If you can place a tape measure next to the gap or seal, that makes it easier to judge. When we look at customer photos, we usually check whether the seal has changed shape first, then whether the size is likely to match. That is more reliable than judging by product appearance alone.

If There Is a Flat Fitting Surface, S312S1235 Adhesive TPE May Be Suitable

If there is no suitable edge for a push-fit seal, but there is a clean, flat, dry surface for adhesion, an adhesive TPE option may be worth considering. For example, the S312S1235 high-temperature TPE adhesive seal is suitable for some 12–35mm gaps and can be used on flat surfaces such as timber frames, door bottoms, side edges, or top edges.

It is not suitable for every sauna door. If the fitting surface has old adhesive, moisture, dust, oil, or a noticeable curve, the bond may be affected. Before ordering, it is better to check the gap range, fitting surface, and ventilation requirements rather than choosing by appearance alone.

For Multiple Doors or Non-Standard Sizes, TPE Can Be Arranged by Project

For commercial saunas, hotel sauna areas, gym saunas, custom glass doors, or several garden sauna doors that need replacing at the same time, standard stock items may not be an exact match.
