You close the shower door. It does not jam, and the glass is not cracked. But the closing edge no longer lines up as it should.
The gap may be wider at the top and much tighter lower down. Or the two glass panels may have moved slightly out of line, so the original magnetic strip only catches in one small section.
That is usually when people start searching: how do you fix a misaligned shower door? Do you need to adjust the hinges? Call someone out to refit it? Or replace the whole glass door?
Before assuming it needs a major repair, take a closer look. If the door still feels stable and opens and closes smoothly, the door itself may still be fine. The problem is often the uneven closing gap left by the misalignment. Water finds its way through that gap, which is why damp marks can appear near the door edge after each shower.
The first step is not to replace the door. It is to look closely at the gap and decide whether it comes from a structural problem, or whether the closing edge is simply no longer sealed properly. This matters because it narrows the problem from “is the door broken?” to “is the closing edge no longer sealed?” Some misalignment issues do not need a new door. The real problem may simply be the side gap that is letting water through.
But seeing a gap is not enough. Before choosing a seal, check whether that gap is linked to a more serious safety issue.

First, Check Whether the Door Still Closes Safely
Before looking at any sealing solution, make sure the door is still safe to use.
If the door wobbles when opened, the hinge screws are loose, the glass edge hits the fixed panel, or the bottom of the door scrapes the floor, this is not just a sealing issue. The door position or hardware needs attention first. A seal can help block water, but it cannot correct the door or support the structure.
Check the glass as well. If there are cracks, chipped edges, or the door has to be forced shut, covering the gap with a seal is not the right fix. This is especially important with frameless glass doors, where the hinges, clamps and weight of the glass all need to work together safely.
If none of these problems are present, and the door closes naturally but the edge does not seal cleanly, the issue is the irregular gap rather than the whole door assembly.
Why a Misaligned Gap Is Harder to Seal Than a Straight Gap
Standard magnetic shower door seals work best on fairly even gaps. When the glass edge and the contact surface are almost parallel, the seal can use its shape to help block water.
A misaligned gap is harder because it may not stay the same width from top to bottom. One section may sit very close, while another pulls away from the contact point. If the contact edge of the seal is too rigid or fixed in shape, it will struggle to deal with that variation.
This is why replacing an old seal with a standard strip does not always solve the problem. Not every seal is made for an uneven closing gap. For a slightly misaligned glass door, the aim is to help the two closing edges make stable contact again, not just add another strip to the glass edge.
So you do not just need another shower door seal. You need one that can adapt to the misaligned gap.
Which Seal Works Better for a Slightly Misaligned Door Gap?
When dealing with a misaligned door gap, look at whether the PVC around the magnetic strip or vertical seal strip is soft enough, with enough compression and movement to cope with the gap.
For this type of problem, choosing the right shower door seal depends less on the old strip name and more on the gap shape, closing angle and glass thickness.
If the top of the strip is too rigid or fixed in shape, it may work well on an even gap. But on a gap that is wider at the top, narrower at the bottom, or only partly aligned, it is less likely to make consistent contact.

For 90-degree closing glass doors with smaller gaps under 10mm, a profile with an additional soft fin may be more suitable. The extra 10mm soft fin inside the strip can help cover the gap created by slight misalignment.

This type of seal is especially useful when the old magnetic strip no longer holds, the door is wider at one point but still closes, water escapes from the side or closing edge, and you do not want to remove the door or refit the whole shower enclosure.
There is a clear limit. A seal will not straighten a crooked door. It is there to close the water path created by slight misalignment. If the door no longer closes naturally, or the two edges cannot meet along the length of the door, the door position should be dealt with before fitting anything new.
Once this type of solution looks suitable, do not buy straight away. Measure the gap properly first.
Measure the Gap in Three Places Before Choosing a Seal
A misaligned shower door gap should not be measured in just one place.
Close the door in its natural position, then measure the gap at the top, middle and bottom. Record the smallest gap, but pay particular attention to the largest one. The largest gap tells you whether the seal can cover the opening; the smallest gap tells you whether the seal may become too tight once fitted.
For example, if the top gap is 10mm, the middle is 8mm and the bottom is only 5mm, do not choose a seal based only on the 8mm measurement. The middle may seal, but the top may still leak, and the bottom may become too tight to install properly.
You also need to check the glass thickness. Common shower doors may use 6mm, 8mm or 10mm glass, and the seal channel needs to match. If the channel is the wrong size, the seal may not hold securely or may affect how the door closes.
Finally, check the closing style. A straight closing edge, a 90-degree closing door, and a glass-to-glass closing edge may all need different seal profiles. Once you know the gap, glass thickness and closing angle, you are much more likely to choose the right profile the first time.

When the Door Should Be Adjusted Before Replacing the Seal
At this stage, if the door only has a gap and still closes naturally, a seal is still worth considering. But some signs mean the problem is beyond what a seal should be expected to fix.
If the bottom of the door scrapes the floor, the door may have dropped. If the glass hits the fixed panel when closing, the alignment may be too far out. If the hinges are loose or make unusual noises, the hardware should be checked first.
A gap can also be too wide. A magnetic seal can compensate for slight misalignment, but it cannot replace proper door adjustment. If the widest part of the gap is clearly beyond the product’s suitable range, for example over 35mm, the seal may not hold properly or may only give a short-term improvement.

The basic judgement is straightforward: if the door closes naturally and the edge has a measurable narrow gap, sealing is a sensible place to start. If the door has to be forced into position, or the opening and closing action is already affected, the door itself should be checked first.
This order helps avoid two problems: over-repairing a door that only needs a better seal, and using a seal to delay a door adjustment that is actually needed.
Final Check: Has the Water Path Been Sealed?
Once the seal is fitted, the final check is whether the water path has been blocked, not whether the door looks perfectly straight.
A slightly misaligned glass door will not return to its original ideal position because of a seal alone. The more realistic aim is that the door still opens and closes normally, the strip makes stable contact, and water no longer escapes directly through the closing edge.
If the original leak point improves after testing, the problem was most likely the closing gap. From there, check from time to time whether the seal has hardened, shifted or lost magnetic pull.
If water still escapes from the same edge, go back through the earlier checks: measure the widest part of the gap again, check whether the strip is aligned, and make sure the door has not dropped.
A shower door seal cannot correct the whole door position. But when the door itself is stable, it can deal with the most immediate problem: the water path left by the misaligned closing gap.
