You may think the hardest part is finding the right shower door bottom seal. Then the real problem appears when you try to fit it.

The old seal has already been removed. The new push-fit shower door bottom seal matches the glass thickness. But the bottom of the glass door sits so close to the shower tray that there is no room to push the seal on. Try sliding it in from one side, and it soon jams before it reaches the right position.

The leak has not even been dealt with yet, and the fitting space has already become the problem. The gap may look small, but a standard push-fit seal is not just a thin rubber strip. It needs a little angle and space before it can clip onto the bottom edge of the glass.

At this point, someone may suggest removing the whole glass door and fitting the seal while the panel is off. In most cases, it is worth pausing before going that far. First, check whether the real issue is the space you have to work with.

Is It a Fitting Problem or a Size Problem?

Many people first assume they have bought the wrong size. Is the glass 6mm, but the seal made for 8mm? Is the fin too long? Is the U-channel too tight?

Those are sensible things to check. But with a tight bottom gap, the problem is often not the seal size. It is the fitting movement itself.

A standard push-fit bottom seal needs to slide over the bottom edge of the glass. If the glass panel were loose in front of you, that would be simple enough: line up the U-channel and press it on slowly. In a real bathroom, the shower door is already hanging on its hinges, with the tray directly underneath. You are not working on an open glass edge. You are trying to push a PVC profile into place inside a very narrow space under the door.

It is not that the seal cannot grip the glass. It is that there is no room to get it onto the glass in the first place.

I once saw a customer photo where the old yellowed seal had already been removed, and the new seal looked correct when placed beside the door. The problem was the distance between the glass and the tray. The seal had to be angled in, and as soon as it touched the bottom edge of the glass, it hit the tray. Another push-fit seal with the same structure would probably have led to the same result.

Gap Size Is Not the Same as Fitting Space

A tight bottom gap can be misleading because it looks easy to measure.

People often say, “My bottom gap is 4mm.”
Or, “There is about 5mm between the glass and the tray. Which seal do I need?”

That number helps, but it only tells you the distance between the bottom edge of the glass and the tray when the door is closed. It does not tell you whether a seal can actually be fitted.

A push-fit bottom seal needs more than water-blocking space. It needs fitting space. The U-channel needs an angle to clip onto the glass, the soft fin needs room to flex, and the door still needs enough clearance to open and close. Some doors have only a 4–5mm bottom gap when closed, but when the door is opened, there is more than 10mm of working space between the glass edge and the bathroom floor or the outer edge of the tray. In that situation, a push-fit bottom seal may still fit well because there is enough angle to press the U-channel onto the glass.

The opposite can also happen. The closed gap may look like 5mm, but when the door is open, the glass still sits less than 10mm above the floor or tray edge. The seal is then hard to fit from underneath, and sliding it in from the side can quickly become difficult. That is the kind of tight gap that makes a push-fit seal awkward.

When Removing the Door Turns a Small Job Into a Bigger One

When a push-fit seal will not go on, some plumbers may suggest removing the glass door. That advice is not always wrong. Once the door is off, the bottom edge of the glass is exposed, and the U-channel is much easier to fit properly.

For a normal household seal replacement, though, removing the door should not usually be the first step.

A shower glass door is heavier than it looks. This is especially true with frameless shower doors, where the glass edges are exposed. The door needs to be supported carefully, and there is always a risk of catching the glass against tiles, metal hinges or the shower tray. Toughened glass is not fragile in ordinary use, but its edges are more vulnerable than the flat surface.

Putting the door back is not just a matter of rehanging it. The height, hinge angle, magnetic closing position and tray clearance can all affect how the door works afterwards. A job that started as “the seal will not fit” can turn into a door that sits slightly lower, scrapes the tray, or no longer closes neatly.

If the door still opens and closes normally, and the only issue is that the bottom space is too tight, do not rush into turning it into a door-removal job.

Some original factory seals, unusual hinge designs or older installations may need professional attention. But for many tight bottom-gap situations, the problem is not that the door has to come off. It is that this particular fitting method does not suit the space available.

Signs a Push-Fit Bottom Seal Is Not Right for This Door

The clearest sign is that the seal cannot get the right angle at the start. When you place it under the glass, it will not line up with the U-channel properly. It has to go in at a slant, or it touches the glass and hits the tray almost straight away.

Sliding it in from the side can cause the same problem. The first few centimetres may go in, but the longer the seal travels, the tighter it becomes. A push-fit U-channel is designed to grip the glass firmly, so when a long seal jams halfway along, forcing it usually only bends the PVC or distorts the edge.

Another warning sign is that the door starts scraping the tray after the seal is fitted. If the bottom edge of the glass was already low once the old seal came off, adding another clip-on shower bottom seal can make the door tight, drag across the tray, or stop it returning to its usual closed position.

At that point, another similar-sized seal is unlikely to solve the problem.

What Can You Use If There Is No Room for a Push-Fit Seal?

If a push-fit seal has no angle to go on, an adhesive shower door sweep may be worth considering.

It works differently from a traditional push-fit seal. A standard push-fit profile has to clip over the bottom edge of the glass, so when the space under the door is tight, it can easily catch on the shower tray. An adhesive seal does not need to wrap around the full glass edge. It can be fixed to the lower part of the glass to cover a small gap, or fitted to the threshold or tray edge to help keep water inside the shower area. You do not have to reach right under a narrow door gap, and you do not have to force a full U-channel into place.

This type of fitting is better suited to doors that still open and close normally, but no longer have enough space for a thicker bottom profile. For example, the glass may sit close to the shower tray, the push-fit seal may have no fitting angle, and the homeowner may not want to remove the whole door just to replace one seal.

Surface preparation matters more with adhesive seals. In many UK bathrooms, limescale, soap scum, old adhesive marks and trapped moisture are the things that stop the adhesive from bonding properly. Clean the glass or threshold first, dry it fully, then press along the full length of the seal rather than only at the ends. After fitting, allow 7–10 hours for the adhesive to settle before using the shower.

This is where the choice between push-on and self-adhesive shower door seals becomes more practical than theoretical. One relies mainly on grip around the glass edge; the other relies on a clean, flat bonding surface. When the clearance under the door is very tight, the fitting method can matter more than the gap measurement.

Check These Three Fitting Spaces Before Ordering

Before buying another seal, crouch down by the door and look carefully for a minute. In many cases, you can tell quite quickly whether there is enough space to fit one.

First, check the lowest point under the door, not just the middle.
Close the door in its usual position and look along the bottom edge of the glass from one side to the other. Many doors do not sit at exactly the same height all the way across. The lowest point may be near the opening side or closer to the hinge. If the lowest point is very different from the middle, it may be closer to an uneven gap under the shower door than a simple small-gap issue. A coin, thin card or small ruler can help you compare the space.

Second, test how the seal would actually go in.
Do not only hold the new seal beside the door to check the length. When fitted, it needs to clip onto the glass from underneath or slide in slowly from one side. Use a small piece of the old seal, a bit of card, or the end of the new seal to test the angle gently. If even the end has no room to enter, the full-length seal will be harder again.

Third, open and close the door slowly to see where the tray sits highest.
Some shower tray edges are not perfectly even. At a certain point in the swing, the bottom of the glass may suddenly sit closer to the tray. Before fitting anything, open and close the door slowly a few times and watch where it comes closest. That is usually where a new seal will scrape first.

Do Not Treat a Fitting Space Problem as a Size Problem

A small bottom gap does not always mean the shower door has to be removed.

If a push-fit bottom seal has no angle to fit into the existing space, or if it drags, jams or stops the door closing properly once fitted, another similar profile will usually lead to the same problem.

In that situation, you are not simply looking for a “smaller” seal. You need a fitting method that does not have to clip around the bottom edge of the glass in the first place.
