Buying the wrong shower door seal often has less to do with measuring badly, and more to do with treating two different fitting methods as if they solve the same problem.
Both can look very similar at first glance: clear, slim, flexible, and made to keep water in the shower. But a push-on seal grips the edge of the glass. A self-adhesive seal sticks to a surface. One needs something to clip onto. The other needs a clean, steady place to stick. Pick the wrong type, and you may end up with a seal that will not push on, adhesive that lifts after a few days, or a bathroom floor that is still wet after every shower.
Before deciding which one is better, look at the door. Does this part of the shower need a seal that grips the glass, or does it need a water barrier on the tray, threshold, or another fixed surface?
Quick answer: If the glass edge is exposed, straight, easy to measure, and the door can open and close without squeezing the seal, start with a push-on seal. If there is no clear glass edge to grip, or the issue is closer to the tray, threshold, or a fixed flat surface, a self-adhesive seal may make more sense. What people often miss is not the product name. It is the bottom gap, the way the door moves, and whether the seal will be pulled, dragged, or simply left in place to block water.
Don’t Copy the Old Seal Until You Know Why It Failed
A lot of people take off the old seal, photograph it from the front, and start looking for another clear strip that looks the same. It is a natural thing to do, but it is not always the best clue. The old seal may not have been the right type in the first place. It may just have stayed there for a few years and worked well enough.
If the old seal has only yellowed, hardened, or split along the soft fin, and the glass edge is still clean and exposed, it is probably normal wear. If the door was not scraping, slipping, or leaking repeatedly before, you can usually stay with the same fitting style and focus on the glass thickness and bottom gap.
If the old seal keeps sliding down, one end is always lifting, or the door drags it across the tray every time it opens, do not rush to buy the same type again. That may not be a bad seal. It may be a sign that the position is not suited to that kind of fitting.
A front photo of the old strip rarely tells the whole story. The fitting area matters more: the full shower door when closed, the glass edge, and the gap under the door. The full door photo shows the door style and where water is likely to travel. The glass edge shows whether there is anything for a seal to grip. The gap shows whether a new seal would drag, press, or squeeze once fitted.
Do not assume the new seal should match the old one just because the old one looked that way.
When the Glass Edge Can Hold It, a Push-On Seal Is Usually Safer
A push-on shower door bottom seal only works if the glass gives it something to grip. Stand in front of the door and run your fingers along the bottom or side edge of the glass. If you can feel a full, straight, exposed glass edge, with no aluminium frame, plastic trim, roller, or bracket in the way, that position may suit a push-on seal.
Then check the glass thickness. A 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, or 10mm glass panel needs a different channel size. Guessing is risky. If the channel is too loose, the seal may not fall off straight away, but it can start sliding after a few uses. If it is too tight, it can be difficult to push on and may distort the U-channel. The holding force comes from how the clip-on channel grips both sides of the glass, rather than from glue or silicone.
At the bottom of the door, the gap matters too. Many push-on bottom seals have soft fins in different lengths for different bottom gaps. If the fin is crushed against the tray when the door closes, or you hear it rubbing each time the door opens, the seal is being pulled and stressed in everyday use.
For example, the old bottom seal may be yellow and split, but once you remove it, the glass edge is clean. There are no adhesive marks and no frame in the way. In that case, the door usually does not need to change to a self-adhesive seal. It is more likely to need a push-on seal with the right channel and fin length.
Side seals and magnetic closing edges often suit push-on fitting as well, provided the glass edge is available. These parts move with the door and deal with repeated closing, separating, and light pulling. A proper grip on the glass is usually more reliable than adhesive in a moving area.
If the glass edge is exposed, the thickness is known, and the door movement does not squeeze the seal, start with a push-on option. If you have not checked the glass thickness or bottom gap yet, it is better to measure the glass thickness and gap, before choosing the channel size or fin length.
When It Cannot Push On Properly, Self-Adhesive Starts to Make Sense
A self-adhesive seal is not just the easier version of a push-on seal. It is for places where there is no sensible edge for a push-on channel to grip.
A very small bottom gap is a common example. If there is hardly any room between the glass and the tray, a normal push-on bottom seal may not have space to fit and move. Even if you manage to fit it, the soft fin may stay pressed against the tray and get pulled every time the door opens.
When the bottom gap is already tight, the question is not whether you can find a longer fin. It is whether there is enough space for a clip-on channel at all. That is the same kind of judgement behind a small gap under the shower door: check the fitting space before choosing a thicker or firmer bottom seal.
Some door bases are awkward for a full push-on strip too. A roller may leave only a short straight section. A bracket may block the path of the seal. You may need to cut around a fitting just to make the strip sit in place. That can get around the obstruction, but it can also leave a new path for water.
Self-adhesive seals are more useful as low water barriers. They can work along the outer edge of a tray, on the inside of a threshold, or on a fixed flat area beside the glass where there is no edge to grip. They do not need to sit around the glass edge, and they are less dependent on glass thickness.
The surface still matters. Before fitting one, run your hand over the glass base, tray edge, or threshold. If there is limescale, old silicone, soap residue, uneven texture, or a surface that feels damp again after wiping, do not rush to stick anything down. Adhesive failure often starts at one end. Water gets in, the edge turns cloudy or loose, and the strip slowly lifts.
That is where a self-adhesive seal starts to make sense: not because it is easier, but because the door has given you a flat surface rather than a glass edge to work with.
Be Careful Using Adhesive on Magnetic or Moving Edges
A self-adhesive seal can block water, but it should not be expected to take the daily pulling force of a moving door. The common problem area is not a fixed threshold. It is the side of the door, especially a magnetic closing edge.
A self-adhesive magnetic strip can look convenient. There is no need to measure the glass thickness, no channel to push on, and no visible clip. But a magnetic strip is not a static water barrier. It grips when the door closes and pulls apart when the door opens. That repeated movement puts the adhesive under more than simple surface contact. It is being pulled, twisted, and softened by steam and water over time.
Think about what happens after a shower. Your hand is wet, you pull the door from the magnetic side, and the magnet holds for a moment before separating. That force is concentrated at the magnetic strip and travels back to the adhesive on the glass. A long side strip is narrow by nature, so once the top or bottom starts to lift, cleaning spray, soap residue, and moisture can get behind it.
A short, low-resistance adhesive strip may be fine in some fixed positions. But for longer vertical magnetic strips, larger side seals, or doors opened several times a day, adhesive should not be the first choice. In that spot, the seal needs a proper grip, not just adhesive trying to cope with every pull of the door.
There is a simple test. Close the door, then open it gently and watch the area where the seal would sit. If that spot is pulled, twisted, knocked, or separated by magnetic force every time the door opens, a push-on seal is usually the better direction, as long as there is a glass edge to grip.
Both Types Still Need the Right Gap
Once you have chosen the fitting method, check the working gap. A push-on seal does not only need the right glass thickness; its bottom fin also needs room to move. A self-adhesive seal does not only need to stick; it also needs the right height and a door path that will not knock it loose.
If the bottom gap is only a few millimetres, a long push-on fin may drag along the tray. It may close at first, but after a few days the door can feel heavier, and one end of the seal may start to loosen.
If the gap is larger, a short fin may not reach far enough to block the water. A threshold strip has the same issue in a different way. Too low, and water can pass over it. Too high, and it may interfere with the door or slowly lift at the adhesive edge.
Measure the bottom gap at the left, middle, and right. If one side is 5mm and the other is closer to 10mm, choosing by the largest gap may make the narrow side drag. Choosing by the smallest gap may leave the wider side exposed.
That is why longer shower door seal fins are not automatically the safer choice.
Before buying, do not only look at the largest gap. Check whether the tightest point will drag, and whether the widest point will still be covered.
Some Bottom Leaks Need Both, Not One or the Other
If the glass already has a bottom seal but water still travels along the tray edge, the problem may not be the glass edge itself. The tray or threshold may be missing a low water barrier.
In that case, the push-on seal looks after the glass edge, while a self-adhesive threshold strip creates a fixed barrier on the tray or threshold. They are not doing the same job. One moves with the door. The other stays on the fixed surface.

Before You Order, Take These Photos
Do not rely only on the product title, and do not only photograph the old strip from the front. Most clear shower seals look similar from that angle. What matters is where the new seal has to sit.
First, take a photo of the whole shower door when it is closed. Try to show whether it is a hinged door, folding screen, sliding door, or fixed screen. It should also show roughly where the water escapes and how the door sits against the tray.
Next, take a close-up of the glass edge and the end profile of the old seal. The end profile can show whether it was a push-on channel, a soft fin, or an adhesive strip. The glass edge shows whether there is a bare, straight area for a new seal to grip. In many cases, one end-profile photo is more useful than ten front photos of the old seal.
Then measure the bottom gap at the left, middle, and right. Shower trays are not always perfectly level. Doors can drop slightly over time. Hinges can sit a little out of line. One measurement can easily lead to a seal that fits in one place and fails in another.
Finally, do two small checks. Close the door slowly, then open it halfway, and watch whether the fitting area is squeezed, dragged, knocked, or pulled apart by magnetic force. If you are considering a self-adhesive seal, clean and dry the surface first, then check it again after a few minutes. If it still feels slippery, gritty, uneven, or damp, the adhesive may not hold well.
